Professor Thulisile Madonsela  – Background and Early Life

Born on September 28th, 1962, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Thulisile Madonsela, known to close friends as “Thuli,” graduated from the University of Swaziland with a degree in law in 1987. She then went on to earn her Masters of Law degree from Harvard Law School in 1990, and a Doctorate in Juridical Science from the University of South Africa in 2002. She began her career as a Human Rights lawyer, where she focused on labor rights, gender rights, and social justice matters.

Anti-Apartheid Activism

As a young woman, Professor Madonsela actively participated in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. She often shared stories of how she supported boycotts and protests against the exclusion of black people from mainstream South African society. She also joined the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League, which was a banned organization that fought against the apartheid regime.

Public Protector

Professor Madonsela was appointed as South Africa’s Public Protector in 2009, a position designed to ensure that all government and private institutions in South Africa operated with the principles of accountability, good governance, and transparency. During her tenure, Professor Madonsela was known for her tireless pursuit of social justice. She was passionate about ensuring that the government was held accountable by the public at all times.
