Dr. Ellen Ochoa – The First Hispanic Woman In Outer Space!

Ellen Ochoa is an Astronaut, engineer, and scientist. Here are some fun facts about her:

– She is the first Hispanic woman to go to outer space.

-She was a very bright student, earning valedictorian in 1975. She was even awarded a full-ride scholarship to Stanford, but decided to go to San Diego State, to stay close to home.She performed well in college, earning valedictorian, again. Then, she moved to Stanford University to earn a Master’s degree and a doctorate in electrical engineering.

– After school, she worked as a researcher at the Sandia National Laboratories, working on optical systems. During her time there, she co-invented three patents. She began working at the Ames Research Center, working for NASA.

– She applied for the NASA Training Program, to become an astronaut, multiple times, but didn’t give up. In 1990, she was accepted. After being accepted, she moved to Houston, Texas, where the Johnson Space Center is. She worked at the Johnson Space Center as an astronaut, specializing in robotics, software, and computer hardware.

– She was launched into space aboard the Discovery space shuttle, where her mission lasted nine days. She and her crew studied the effects of the Sun’s energy yield and Earth’s ozone layer, while in space.

– Within the next nine years of her time aboard the Discovery, she participated in three more missions with various jobs, including, payload commander, mission specialist, and flight engineer.

– She became the deputy director of the Johnson Space Center, in 2008. Then, in 2013, she was promoted to the director of the space center. She retired in 2018.

– In 2017, she was inducted into the United Stated Astronaut Hall of Fame.

– Multiple schools have been named after her.
