Kristalina Georgieva – Early Life

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Kristalina Georgieva showed outstanding academic abilities from a young age. In 1976, she was awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Moscow State University, earning a degree in Political Economy, and then continuing to complete a Ph.D. in Economic Science at the same university.

After completing her studies, Kristalina initially worked in academia, but soon shifted her focus to economic policy, taking a job in the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Following this, she worked at the World Bank for the next 17 years, holding a variety of senior positions such as Vice President and Corporate Secretary before eventually becoming the CEO of the Banque Européenne de Reconstruction et de Développement (EBRD).

Kristalina’s vast experience and expertise in economics and policy implementation caught the attention of the European Union. She was appointed the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Response, making her responsible for leading the EU’s response to various global crises, including the Ebola outbreak.

In 2017, Kristalina became the first CEO of the World Bank, making her the first person from an emerging market economy to hold this prestigious position. During her time in this role, she emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing and international cooperation in tackling global challenges such as poverty, gender equality, and climate change.

Kristalina’s Achievements

Kristalina’s achievements and success in leading various organizations and departments have undoubtedly been exceptional. In 2019, she was named Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, and as previously mentioned, that same year, Kristalina was appointed as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, succeeding Christine Lagarde.
