Stephanie Kwolek – Early Years

Stephanie Kwolek was born on July 31, 1923, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. She attended Carnegie Mellon University, where she earned a degree in chemistry. In 1946, Kwolek began her career as a chemist at DuPont, one of the world’s largest chemical companies. It was here where she made one of the most significant contributions to the world of science and industry. In 1965, while working on a project to develop a lightweight fiber for car tires, Kwolek discovered a new type of polymer. This polymer was five times stronger than steel and was incredibly heat resistant. Thus, Kevlar was born.

Kevlar Invention

Kevlar is a synthetic fiber known for its high tensile strength and elasticity. It is used in many applications, including body armor, strengthening composites for aircraft and ships, and sporting equipment such as tennis rackets and skis. Kwolek’s discovery of Kevlar earned her numerous awards and honors, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1995.

Kwolek’s work on Kevlar was groundbreaking not only because of its scientific significance but also because of the barriers she broke for women in science and industry. At the time, the field was very male-dominated, but Kwolek persevered and proved her worth. She shattered the stereotype that women could not contribute significantly to scientific breakthroughs. This paved the way for many women to pursue careers in the field of science and technology.

Stephanie Kwolek’s Legacy

Stephanie Kwolek passed away on June 18, 2014, at the age of 90. However, her legacy continues to inspire women in science and industry. Her achievements remind us that gender should never be a barrier to progress and success. Kwolek’s contribution to science and industry was so significant that the DuPont company named a research facility after her in Richmond, Virginia.
