Huda Kattan – A Global Odyssey

Huda Kattan is one of four siblings born to Iraqi Muslim parents. In the aftermath of the 2003 Iraq War, Huda’s family relocated to the United States, where they embarked on a journey through Oklahoma, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Michigan as Iraqi-Americans. Huda’s career trajectory saw her traverse diverse fields, from finance to teaching, before finding her calling as a makeup artist. Today, she is the driving force behind Huda Beauty, a cosmetics powerhouse with a valuation surpassing $1 billion. The family eventually returned to the Middle East, specifically Dubai, where their homegrown beauty brand blossomed into the multinational sensation it is today. Reflecting on her American years, Huda recollects a time when people often mispronounced her name, opting for “Heidi” instead. As she shared with Vogue Arabia, “I wanted to go by Huda, but people thought it was so weird.”

From Setbacks to Glamour

Huda’s journey took an unexpected turn when she was abruptly terminated from her recruiting job. Undeterred, she decided to pursue her vision for Huda Beauty. She enrolled in a beauty school in Los Angeles and simultaneously commenced her blogging journey on WordPress, sharing invaluable beauty insights. Although the road ahead was fraught with challenges, Huda persevered, taking calculated risks and collaborating with her sisters to craft a brand that would eventually become the most-followed cosmetics entity on Instagram, boasting over 50 million fervent followers. Alongside her sisters, Mona and Alya, Huda propelled the brand to towering heights, launching specific products that garnered immense popularity.

Empowering Women

Arab America’s blog aptly states, “The Huda Beauty team is proof that a beauty brand can have meaning and intelligence as well as glitz and glamour.” Notably, the brand has made substantial contributions, including a one-million-dollar donation to charitable organizations, with five hundred thousand dollars allocated to the NAACP, among others. Beyond philanthropy, Huda has been a vocal advocate against the culture of scrutiny prevalent in the era of social media. She asserts, “Judgment — of ourselves and other women — is holding us back. We must make time to have honest conversations with ourselves about our own insecurities. Only once we’ve done the inner work can we create the environments needed to confidently celebrate not just ourselves, but other women too,” as shared on ThinkWithGoogle.
