Janet Yellen’s Academic Background and Early Career

Janet Yellen’s career in economics began in the 1970s when she earned her Ph.D. from Yale University. She later became a professor at Harvard University and then at the University of California, Berkeley where she spent 35 years. During her tenure at UC Berkeley, she was known for her research on labor economics, macroeconomics, and international trade. Her work contributed to a better understanding of the relationship between unemployment and inflation, which became known as the “Yellen curve”. Yellen’s work in academia laid the groundwork for her future public service.

Career in Public Service

In 1994, Yellen stepped into the world of public service, as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She then became the Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers for President Bill Clinton in 1997. In 2004, Yellen returned to the Federal Reserve as the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Her role included conducting research on the economy and forming monetary policy. In 2010, President Barack Obama nominated her to be Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve, and in 2014, he appointed her as the 15th Chair of the Federal Reserve, the first woman to ever hold this position.

During Yellen’s tenure at the Federal Reserve, the economy experienced substantial improvements. She played a significant role in the process of rebuilding the economy following the 2008 financial crisis. Yellen’s leadership was characterized by her pragmatic approach to economic policies, her focus on lowering unemployment, and her efforts on improving economic opportunities for Americans. She also played a vital role in introducing transparency at the Federal Reserve by holding quarterly press conferences.

Yellen’s contribution to economics has been recognized many times throughout her career. In 1997, she was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2010, she was awarded the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University, and in 2014 Time magazine identified her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2017, Yellen was awarded the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government by the University of Illinois.

In February 2021, Yellen was confirmed by the Senate to serve as Secretary of the Treasury under President Joe Biden.
