Today we mourn the losses of many soldiers and sailors who risked their lives for the well-being and safety of Americans. Here are the names of only some women who risked their lives for us. We are thankful for all of you.

– Deborah Sampson (First woman to join the Army)

– The Sacred Twenty (First women to join the Navy)

– Opha Mae Johnson (First woman to join the U.S. Marine Corps)

– Esther Blake (First woman to join the Air Force)

– Genevieve and Lucille Baker (they were twins!) and Myrtle Hazard (First women to join the U.S. Coast Guard)

– Private Cathay Williams or William Cathay (she hid the fact that she was a woman to be the first African-American woman in the Army)

– Rear Admiral Grace Brewster Hopper (Helped create the Harvard Mark I)

– Col. Ruby Bradley (One of the most decorated women in the United States Army)

– Lt. Col. Martha McSally (First woman to fly into combat in 1991)

– Millie Bailey (First U.S. Army’s first African-American woman pilot)

– Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester ( First person to be awarded the Silver Star for exceptional valor since World War II)
