Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej: Fighting Infertility Stigma One Country at a Time!

Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, believes that infertility should not be viewed as a death sentence for men or women. In fact, she encourages women who are able to have children to remember those who may struggle with infertility and offer support and assistance in any way they can.

Dr. Kelej’s message is one of hope and empowerment, reminding individuals facing infertility that they still have the power to achieve their dreams and make a positive impact on their communities. Through her work with the Merck Foundation, Dr. Kelej aims to raise awareness about infertility and provide access to medical treatments for those in need.

By breaking the stigma surrounding infertility and promoting fertility education, Dr. Kelej hopes to give every individual the opportunity to start a family if they so choose. She is an inspiration to women and is today’s Smart Girl!

Her Story

Rasha Kelej was born in the early 1970s in Alexandria, Egypt. She attended Alexandria University, where she attained a degree in Pharmacy. She has an MBA from Robert Gordon University, Scotland.

She immediately started working in the pharmaceutical industry and in 2016, was appointed the CEO of the Merck Foundation in Germany.

Career in Healthcare

Kelej has spearheaded campaigns to end the stigma of infertility and empower infertile and childless women in Africa. She has been behind campaigns like ‘More than a Mother’ a campaign to end the stigma around infertility.

She has also trained fertility specialists in Sierra Leone, Gambia, and many other African countries. She had partnered with various first ladies of African countries to end the stigma surrounding infertility.

In 2019, Kelej was recognized as one of the 100 most influential Africans by the UK-based New African magazine.

In 2020 Kelej was appointed as a member of the Egyptian Senate and an advisor with regard to African Health, Economic, and Social Development.

An Inspirational Woman

She recognizes the cultural stigma surrounding infertility and still works to destigmatize the issue through awareness campaigns, empowerment workshops, and training programs for healthcare professionals.

Dr. Kelej’s forward-thinking mindset allows her to push for progress toward more inclusive fertility options and support for those experiencing difficulties starting a family. It is clear that Dr. Kelej’s passion for increasing access to fertility solutions will continue to make a significant impact on individuals and communities worldwide. She is a true inspiration to women!
