Miep Gies – Helped Jewish Citizens of Germany

Miep Gies was a Dutch woman who helped hide Jewish citizens of Germany from the Nazis . Here are some amazing facts about her!

– The name that she was born with is Hermine Santrouschitz.

– When she was eleven, she was sent to live in the Netherlands, away from her home in Vienna, Austria.

– When she was twenty-four, she began to work for Otto Frank (the father of Anne Frank).

– She hid in the Secret Annex of Otto’s for two years. During that time, she would sneak groceries to the family and other Jewish people that she knew, even though it was illegal. If she had been caught, she would have been sent to prison, or even worse.

– She kept one of Anne’s diaries when her family was sent to a concentration camp, hoping that one day, she would be able to give it back to her.

– She was the reason that Anne’s diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, was published.
