  • Her full name is Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm
  • She ran for President of the United States and she was the first woman and African American to have a major party nomination
  • She was born in Brooklyn, New York, but then was sent off to live with her grandmother in Barbados
  • She was elected to the New York State Legislature in 1964
  • She was the second African American woman to serve in New York’s capital, Albany. Fun fact: I live about 2 hours away from Albany!
  • She graduated with honors from Brooklyn College and became a Nursery School teacher
