Susan B. Anthony – American Women’s Rights Activist

Susan B. Anthony was an American women’s rights activist. Read here for fun facts about her:

– She was one of seven children, one of her sister’s names was Hannah, just like me!

– She started off her career as an activist for abolishing slavery, but she started to see how unfairly women were treated, too. She met Elizabeth Cady Stanton for the first time at an anti-slavery gathering in Seneca Falls, NY, which is close to where I live!

– For her 80th birthday, U.S. President William McKinley invited her to celebrate at the White House.

– In 1872, in Rochester, NY (also close to where I live) she and 14 other women registered to vote at a local barber shop. On November 5, she cast a ballot for the presidential election. She and the 14 other women that she was with were arrested. She argued that women already had the constitutional right to vote. The court failed to agree in the case United States vs. Susan B. Anthony. She was fined $100 (which is worth about $1,967.27 today) and refused to pay.

– Her maternal grandfather fought in the American Revolutionary War.

– She had a U.S. Navy ship named after her, and it holds a World’s Record! As of 2015, it holds the World’s Record for the largest rescue on record of people from a ship without any loss of life.
