Florence Nightingale was an English nurse, statistician, and activist. Here are some facts about her:
– She was a nurse during the Crimean War, which made her create her own Nursing School for Nursing students in 1860.
– She was born in Florence, Italy.
– Even though she was born to a wealthy family, she was always taking care of people, beginning at a young age. She would tend to the ill and poor of her community.
– When she became 16, it became her “divine purpose” (as she called it) to become a nurse.
– Because of her works, she was awarded $250,000 from the British government and Queen Victoria gave her a brooch that was nicknamed the “Nightingale Jewel”.
– With the help of Queen Victoria and a few other statisticians, they set off to find the amount of soldiers dying in the British Army. They found out that about 16,000 to 18,000 men had died during the war because of curable diseases, not battle.
– Her Nursing School became The Florence Nightingale Museum in it’s original spot.
