Lilian Ngoyi – Early Years

Born on September 25, 1911, in Pretoria, South Africa, Lilian Ngoyi grew up in a politically active family that instilled a strong sense of justice from an early age. She pursued her education in teaching and worked as a domestic servant before her entry into activism. As a member of the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League, Ngoyi played an instrumental role in organizing nonviolent protests against the apartheid regime.

Activism

In 1954, Lilian Ngoyi led a historic march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the introduction of Pass Laws that restricted movement and daily activities of black Africans. A particular event marked in history as the Women’s March played a significant role in the country’s political history, with the government finally being forced to abolish the law. This event triggered a series of anti-apartheid protests and demonstrations, leading the way to the eventual downfall of the system.

Ngoyi continued to play an active role in the struggle against apartheid in the following years, inspiring more women to join the fight for liberation. However, in 1958, she was arrested and detained without a trial for five years for her political activities. She became the first woman to be elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC in 1962 and was extensively involved in coordinating protests and other activities to bring the system down.

Recognition

She received national and international recognition for her contributions, including an appointment as President of the Federation of South African Women. She became the first woman elected to a position in the organization’s history and a consultant of the most prominent liberation movements. Ngoyi’s inexhaustible contributions to South Africa’s struggle for freedom earned her the revered title of “the mother of the nation.”
