Smart Girl Stories

Meet Smart Girl – Elvine Ouma

With four years of experience as a freelance writer and a strong foundation in Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights advocacy, gender journalism, and climate change storytelling, I bring a unique blend of skills to the table. As a beneficiary of the SHE LEADS project, I’ve not only immersed myself in the transformative power of gender mainstreaming but have also become a creative storyteller and mobile journalist committed to amplifying the voices of the minoritized and underrepresented.

My journey in communication has been enriched by diverse experiences, from crafting compelling press releases to curating social media content for organizations like the African Gender and Media Initiative (GEM Trust) and writing a position paper for the Polycom Development Project. I pride myself on a comprehensive understanding of multi-platform content creation, ensuring that each piece is engaging but also insightful and informative. Whether it’s drafting captivating headlines or adapting content for maximum reach and engagement, I understand what it takes to resonate with diverse audiences.

What sets me apart is my commitment to telling stories that question systems of power and initiate uncomfortable conversations, all to drive radical change. Through the SHE LEADS project, I’ve learned the art of leveraging storytelling as a tool for advocacy, particularly in the realms of gender inequality, climate change, and women’s leadership. My work extends beyond traditional writing, encompassing podcasting as a means to amplify underrepresented voices, a skill I honed through training with Akili Dada.

Recognition has come in various forms, from securing a shortlist spot for CNN’s As Equals call for stories on gender inequality to being honoured with a fellowship from African Women in Media (AWiM). This fellowship allowed me to delve deeper into the nuances of writing about women in politics, adding another layer to my storytelling arsenal.

My blog is a testament to my adaptability, covering topics ranging from health, finances, and sexual and reproductive health rights to mental health, advocacy, relationships, and LGBTQIA+ issues. Join me on this journey of transformative storytelling, advocacy, and positive change, where each word is a step toward making a lasting impact. Let’s connect and weave narratives that resonate, provoke thought, and spark meaningful conversations. Check out my blog posts at https://potentash.com/author/elvine-ouma/
